Some people say the key to a woman’s heart is flowers… maybe diamonds. NOPE! The key to my heart is a street full of vegan food vendors where I can stuff my face with goodies all day.
My friend Alec, who’s also vegan, recently invited me to go to the North Hollywood vegan food fair that they hold every Sundaynday and, of course, I said yes. For those of you who have never heard of Vegan Sunday NoHo, it’s basically just a street in North Hollywood that gets filled with vegan food vendors, retailers, and food trucks, but the fun part is: they switch up the vendors every week! So every week is a new surprise.
First and foremost (before I get into the details), I just want to say I had a great time and the food was BOMB. I 10/10 recommend going at least one Sunday this year if you are vegan or a foodie.
So anyway, what exactly did I stuff my face with? Well, I will explain all the items below.
THE BASE CO.
This might be one of my favorite places EVER. They are a company that uses all-natural sweeteners to make delicious little drinks and tonics.
I actually went to one of their stands at the LA Smorgasburg a few years back and got a lavender charcoal base, mixed with seltzer. I shit you not, I have dreamt about that fizzy drink for years after so you can imagine how freaking excited I was to find out they had a tent at this Vegan Sunday Noho event. I cried tears of joy and then ordered the same lavender, charcoal, fizzy drink that I had dreamed about for so long. TEN OUT OF TEN. That shit is so good. I can’t explain why it’s so damn good, but it is. Trust me.
Plus, they give you a mason jar to drink it out of which is oh so environmentally trendy and hipster. We love that.
SWAMIJI VEGAN PIZZERIA
The next place we went to was a little pizzeria stand called Swamiji, where my friend Alec and I split a Margherita pizza. TBH, the pizza was $13 and was so fucking small, I was like… what is this? A pizza for ants!?! (It looks bigger in the pic, but that box was legit a mini pizza box.) Plus, they took forever to make it. It was good, but not great. So would I come back to this place? Probably not. Did I enjoy the pizza though? Um, carbs were involved, so of course.
CHICANA VEGANA
Oh my gosh… this place was INSANE. Alec ordered us the Cali Baerito, which had: vegan Asada, seasoned french fries, vegan cheddar cheese, and vegan sour cream and it was, like I said, INSANE. It tasted like freaking heaven in a little wrap and I’m obsessed. I 1,000,000% recommend this option to anyone who likes good tasting food. Like, who knew fries IN a burrito would be so dank!? Also, it was soy-free for those with soy allergies, so yay!
THE DONUTTERY
Donuts!!! Need I say more? I’ve actually heard about this donut shop a buncha times but never knew where it was located, so I never went. That’s why, when I saw the truck at this event, I had to give it a try.
I ended up getting a fat AF apple fritter, a sugar-coated/guava-filled donut puff thing, and a pistachio donut. The guy I ordered from was so sweet that he gave me an extra donut (a blueberry donut) for free! The apple fritter and guava donut were TO DIE FOR. I want them all over again. The blueberry and pistachio were aight. I probs wouldn’t order them again. But I am a ho for apple fritters so I would 100% get it again.
COMPTON VEGAN
I’ve actually eaten here before. My friend Ali was doing a journalism project on the restaurant a few years back and brought me back a plate of vegan mac and cheese and ribs, which were great! However, this time, I wanted to try something different, so Alec ordered the “Aloha Bowl.” It was basically half of a carved out pinapple filled with yummy rice, terryaki sauce, and vegan shrimp!!! It was delicious!
For those of you that are like… vegan shrimp!? Yeah, I was skeptical too and usually stay away from vegan sea food, but I was feeling adventerous this time and gave it a go! It was actually good! It obviously didn’t taste as sea-foody as real shrimp (which is kind of a good thing because #yuck), but the texture was on point!
So yeah, that was what I stuffed my face with today at Vegan Sunday NoHo. If you live nearby, check it out!!
