Vegan in Tokyo 2024

Hey guys!! Last time I went to Tokyo was 2018, so it’s been a WHILE. I won’t lie, I was only here for 2 1/2 days for a pitstop on my way to Seoul so I didn’t get to explore that many places (perhaps check out our 2018 post for more inspo?) but I will share all the random vegan findings I found along the way.

To begin with, Tokyo is ten times more vegan friendly than Seoul. Alternative milk is super popular, as well as vegan options at cafes/convenience stores. ALSO, if you’re addicted to matcha like I am, a trip to Tokyo is worth it for the top-tier matcha lattes alone.

I recommend the Google translate app because there is a camera function where you can take pictures of labels and it will translate for free 🙂 I also recommend the Happy Cow app for vegan suggestions no matter where you are.

Before we get into the food, look at this sticker I saw on my way to a vegan spot:

OKAY let’s begin with the FOOD.

  1. Fruits and Season

Have you guys seen those pillowy heaven looking cream sandwiches with fruit in the middle? NO?! Well, you’re about to. I have always wanted to try one of these SO bad but they are never vegan because of the, well, cream. D U H. Well, Tokyo had a few cream sandwich places that were all vegan or had vegan options.  I went to Fruits and Season and this place was SUPER cute. Right next door was a little temple/shrine which was super nice to visit after.

They had all different types of fruit sandwiches and I got the grape and the mango. I also ordered an iced matcha latte. I drank so many matcha lattes in Tokyo that my heart was palpitating. BUT WORTH IT.

The grape sandwich was SOOOOO good. The bread was so soft. The cream was so fresh. And the grapes added the perfect crunch. The mango tasted a little whack, but mango is always hit or miss, so maybe skip that one. The matcha latte was FANTASTIC, as expected. Deff coming back next time I’m in Tokyo!

2) Green Italian TORCIA

No idea what the name of this place even means BUT my friend Kanako, her husband, and I went to this place for dinner and the food was super yummy! I forgot to take pictures but we got fries with an aioli, a vegan mushroom pizza, and a pasta I think? I don’t think it’s worth running out of your way for but it was the perfect late night dinner spot in a pinch. My friend’s husband had never tried vegan food and really loved the food so I guess that means it’s good!!!

3) Weller Convenience Store

This is an ALL VEGAN convenience store that sells everything from prepared food, snacks, body products, etc. It was a really cute store and really fun to look around. I got a few snacks to try. To be honest, I didn’t love most of them, but perhaps I just grabbed the wrong items. Love that a place like this exists in Tokyo though! Really nice to not have to translate ingredients to make sure it’s vegan!

4) Convenience Store

The regular convenience stores had a lot of accidentally vegan options like inari, pickled veggies, red bean buns, etc. Deff check out a convenience stores in Tokyo for easy/quick vegan snacks and make sure to have your google translate app at the ready!

5) Matcha Tokyo

This place was SO good that I came back twice. Their matcha latte was 10/10. SUCH high quality matcha. If you LOVE matcha like me, come here. ‘NUFF SAID.

6) Onibus Coffee

This coffee shop is so so cute. It’s in Meguro City in Tokyo, a really cute area I wanted to explore but unfortunately could not because my sim card malfunctioned and I had to go back to my hotel to figure it out. BUT I, at least, got the chance to visit this adorable coffee shop. Not only was the coffee delicious but also this coffee shop is right next to a train track so if you go upstairs, you can do work on your laptop as you look out at the trains that roll by. It was very majestic and relaxing. Felt like a Studio Ghibli film.

7) Starbucks

Alert the media: Starbucks in Tokyo has a vegan GLAZED DONUT. And it was DELICIOUS. Not too sweet, just right. WOW. I’m craving one right now. I also got their iced almond milk matcha latte and the almond milk had such an almondy flavor to it that I really liked. Deff come here for an early morning matcha and donut 🙂

8) Ovgo Baker

This cute bakery was in the La Foret mall (if you love shopping, go here). They had an assortment of different flavored vegan cookies. They weren’t mind-blowing by any means but they were super yummy and the different flavors were so fun to try.  If you’re shopping and need a snack, I reccomend.

9. IKEA cafe

Yes, Ikea has a separate cafe in Tokyo and, of course, they have vegan options. Their vegan soft serve is SO SO good. I went back twice to get it. Highly recommend. They also have vegan nuggets and a hot dog. The nuggets were okay but I’ll never complain about a vegan option. HOWEVER, the way they label their plant-based items can get a little confusing on the self-order digital board, so I saw “plant-based cheese hot dog” and ordered it. Halfway through eating, I realized it was a REAL HOT DOG with vegan cheese. HUH???????????????? So nasty. SO just be careful and learn from my mistakes. They do have a vegan hot dog but just know the menu can be unclear so make sure you double check everything.

10. Medel Deli

So I actually didn’t go to this place but I did pass by it on my way to another vegan place and saw that they had vegan options so I wanted to share!

Tokyo, I can’t wait to come back again one day and try even more vegan places! But for now, thank you for the glorious matcha lattes!
