OK, so if you’re a vegan, and you find yourself in Morocco, have NO FEAR. I got you covered. I gotchu kid.
So, here are some of my tips.
- Speaking Arabic or French is a definite plus. I traveled with my friend’s family who spoke fluent French, so they were able to explain to waiters what “Veganism” meant. If you don’t speak any of those languages, LOL good luck.
- You will probably end up eating things that aren’t vegan accidentally just because of the language barrier. Don’t beat yourself up about it. As they would say in Goodwill Hunting, “It’s not your fault”.
- Get excited because Moroccan food is the tits! It’s SO good. It’s literally so delicious and most of it is made of vegetables, potatoes, dates, olives, couscous, lentils, squash, and chickpeas (which are foods that most vegans already love).
So I will list all of the places that I ate vegan food from, but if you want more in depth detail and pictures, go visit the individual blog posts of each restaurant/hotel. Link below:(http://www.thatveganlifedoe.com/location/morocco/)
Restaurants:
- Le Marocain at La Mamounia hotel is a Moroccan restaurant that can accommodate to vegan if you explain to the waiters what you can and can’t have (they speak english at the hotels)
- L’Italien at La Mamounia hotel is an Italian restaurant that was also very good at accommodating to vegans and has AMAZING pasta.
- Al Fassia is a traditional Moroccan restaurant that was able to make some of their vegetarian dishes vegan, especially my favorite dish of the entire trip, which was a lentil, squash stew. SO GOOD. I know it sounds lame and middle-age-y (if you don’t read this blog on a daily, I’m literally only 20 years old), but this stew was out of this world.
- La Villa Canaille can make a vegan gazpacho and plain pasta with olive oil. Not the most exciting choice, but it’s an option.
- La Terrasse Des Epices is a really pretty restaurant on a terrace and they made some BOMB ASS vegetable pasta with tomato sauce.
Hotels:
- La Mamounia is where I stayed with my friend’s family. It’s a beautiful hotel and had lots of vegan options on the room service menu (obviously things had to be modified, nothing was clearly marked ‘vegan’), and lots of vegan options at the restaurants in the actual hotel (As stated above)
Street food:
- Moroccan donuts exist. AND THEY ARE VEGAN. I know, like what???? These traditional donuts are called Sfenjs and they are basically fried dough rolled in sugar and they taste like funnel cake. Highly recommend finding one of these donut stands. Be careful though, because at the stand we went to, the man was making some of the donuts with egg, so make sure to get the ones without the egg. SO GOOD THO.
If you have the chance to check out Morocco, and you’re vegan, don’t let that stop you because there are lots of vegan options available and Morocco is pretty cool. It’s not every day you get to say you went to Africa!
