New country alert!!! Belgium! Why? Idk, because we felt like it! This past weekend, my sister and I decided to do a cute little day trip (via train from London) to Brussels to visit a new country and try what Belgium is famous for: their waffles, their fries, and their chocolate. I guess, in retrospect, it was more of a food tour than a day trip, but YOLO! ‘Tis the life of a vegan, innit?
Anyway, Brussels was super fun! Everyone was so nice, the food was out of this world, and the city was super quaint and cute. I would definitely recommend it for a one or two day trip – simply for the food alone. Here is everywhere we went on our cute lil trip:
- Veganwaf
Veganwaf is a fully vegan food stall, just a few seconds walk outside of the Brussels Palace, specializing in – you guessed it – vegan Belgium waffles. My sister and I each got the classic waffle with chocolate sauce, strawberries, and whipped cream.
When I say these waffles were OUT OF THIS WORLD, I say it with my whole chest. Whoever created veganwaf needs their pu$$y ate immediately. The waffles were SO delicious. The chocolate sauce was incredible. The strawberries were so fresh and sweet. And the whipped cream!? Don’t even get me started on the damn whip. The most insanely delicious whipped cream (vegan or not) I’ve EVER had in my life. It was as thick as shaving cream, but so freaking sweet and delicious. It also came out of the coolest whipped cream machine which spun perfect dollops of whipped cream onto each vegan waffle. This place is a MUST if you are vegan. 11/10 recommend.
2. Fries Atelier
Belgium is known for its Belgian fries, but not all fries in Belgium are vegan. Lots of them are fried in animal fat, so we used our handy dandy Happy Cow app to find which fries were vegan. The most highly recommended place was Fries Atelier, just a few minutes walk from the palace. So we got fries with ketchup (their piccalilli sauce was also vegan, but they were out!) and two fresh teas, one ginger and one mint flavored.
THE FRIES WERE INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally the best french fries I have EVER had in my living life. Perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and mushy on the inside. I can’t get over how delicious they were. I wish I could eat them every day. Another 11/10 recommend. Like straight up insane in the membrane.
3. Mary Chocolatier
Thirdly, Belgium is known for its smooth and creamy Belgian chocolate, so we just HAD to stop at a chocolatier. According to Happy Cow, Mary Chocolatier came highly recommended, so we checked it out. It is the cutest little chocolate shop with the most beautifully designed chocolate boxes and bags. It was simply “for the girls.” Also, they had a ton of vegan options, which the amazingly sweet staff member helped point out and get our vegan chocolate box together.
They had vegan truffles, vegan chocolate covered marzipan (one orange, one pistachio), as well as a smooth chocolate cone and mini “cupcake” shaped chocolate. They were super yummy!!! I wouldn’t say as mind-blowing as the fries and waffles, but delicious nonetheless! My favorite was the chocolate orange marzipan and Bella loved the truffles and the smooth cupcake-shaped chocolate.
If this post alone didn’t convince you to go to Brussels, idk what will, bruh!
