Is anybody as obsessed with mochi ice cream as I am!? It’s like soft chewy pillows of goodness filled with sweet cold ice cream. I legit grew up on this stuff. I used to buy it at the Asian market next to my childhood dentist’s office. Green tea mochi ice cream is the THE MOVE.
While we were strolling in Manhattan this past week with our friend Rebecca, we stumbled upon Mochidoki! That’s what I love about the city. You just walk and, on the way, you find so many hidden treasures. I remembered somebody mentioning that Mochidoki had vegan options, so we decided to go inside and check.
Lo and behold, they do!!!! (What does lo and behold even mean??? And like who taught everybody that phrase? Were we just born knowing what it meant?? Help! I need answers!) Back to Mochidoki…. They had an entire display of vegan options (like half the display was labeled vegan) that had sorbet filled mochi!!! And don’t worry, it wasn’t all fruit flavored sorbets. They had a chocolate hazelnut and a matcha flavor too.
I got the choco hazelnut, the matcha, and the strawberry. They were yummy and refreshing. A perfect treat on a hot NY summer day. They weren’t outstanding though and a little pricey. The strawberry was my favorite surprisingly. They were yummy but the sorbet was more icy than creamy, and I’d rather eat mochi ice cream than mochi sorbet. My friend who isn’t vegan got the cake batter one (not vegan) and loved it, so it’s possible their vegan options are just inferior. But we SO appreciate the options for us vegans!!
Would I go back? Probably not. But it’s a cute little shop and if you pass by it, maybe try one flavor and see for yourself!
