So we’re vegan (obvs) and Jewish (maybe not obvs?), so what better than to find than a VEGAN JEWISH FOOD STAND at the Atwater Village farmer’s market in LA? Ok, you caught me. I didn’t stumble upon this place. I’ve seen it on social media for over a year and went out of my way to find it. But you know what, sometimes a little fib adds a little flavor to the story, ok!?
Mort and Betty’s a little vegan Jewish deli, one could say, that serves all sorts of bagels, matzo ball soup, and traditional Jewish pastries like rugelach, hamantashen, black and white cookies, and much more!
My sister and I got two of the bagel sandwiches to split. I couldn’t find the names of them online, but I think one was called ” Megan the Scallion” which was vegan cream cheese and seasoned tomatoes and some other stuff. The second one was a carrot “lox” bagel with some other stuff as well. We also got a black and white cookie and a chocolate tahini rugelach!
Our review: the Megan the Scallion bagel was super yummy and fresh and juicy from the tomatoes. We definitely preferred that one to the lox one, which was good but not as good as the juicy tomato one. I would get the Megan the Scallion again for sure. The bagels were a bit stiff and chewy because they weren’t toasted, so maybe I’d ask for them toasted next time too. Makes for an easier and cleaner bite, ya know?
Also, the desserts were only ok in our opinion, but, to be fair, I had authentic chocolate tahini rugelach in Tel Aviv, Israel and NOTHING trumps that, so I’m definitely biased. They weren’t bad at all though. Just good have had more flavor 🙂
All in all, I love the vegan Jewish representation. Would I go out of my way to return here? Probably not. But if I was at the Atwater Village farmer’s market, would I stop here for lunch or dessert? For sure!
